This item is ideal for display or as a conversation piece but it will do little good in the field. If you know that the recipient likes to play with his collection, you want to opt for a sturdy piece that can take a little punishment.

The antique compass is designed according to its function. There are items that are designed to be carried in a pocket and used while in travel. One antique compass will be made quite like a pocket watch and another will be designed to sit on a table. The choice you make, of course, depends on how the item will be used.

The pocket antique compass can be a little tricky. There are many originals but there are also many replicas as well. Some recipients love replicas, especially if the item is going to be used during travel away from home. However, others want an authentic antique compass and nothing else.

You can pretty much bet that a silver and gold pocket compass is a replica. If you come across an antique compass that is made of silver and gold, you have stumbled on a rare find, especially if the item was made during the first two World Wars.
